England fans celebrating
Spread the love

It’s the hope that kills you. Another tournament, another disappointing ending for Gareth and his players. We all have our own way that we would manage England; drop Kane, start Palmer, bring another left back! Alas, it’s out of our hands, there’s nothing we can do as fans. However, as entrepreneurs and business owners, we ARE in control. We call the shots.

Today, our regular contributor Carol Verity, co-founder of wegetdigital.com, shares her article with the psychology to spark that connection with your audience.

They say the camera never lies, but just make sure that what you are exposing is honest and true to the topic you are portraying. You need Vitamin E!

Excite

Verb – ex•cit•ed, ex•cit•ing, ex•cites

1. To stir to activity.
2. To call forth (a reaction or emotion, for example); elicit: odd noises that excited our curiosity.
3. To arouse strong feeling in: speakers who know how to excite a crowd. See Synonyms at provoke.
4. Physiology To produce increased activity or response in (an organ, tissue, or part); stimulate.

YUP all of the above. Really pretty much self-explanatory… especially ‘To stir activity’ – this is what you are aiming to do with any of the content that you create. Achieve this and your community will follow you till the ends of the earth… or even cyber space!

Enthuse

Verb – en•thused, en•thus•ing, en•thus•es

  1. To cause to become enthusiastic
  2. To show or express enthusiasm

Don’t you find that when someone is enthusiastic about something you can also be stirred into becoming enthusiastic as well? A teacher at school who is enthusiastic about their subject is far more likely to have attentive and ‘eager to learn’ students than one who is apathetic?

Entertain

Verb – en•ter•tained, en•ter•tain•ing, en•ter•tains

  1. To hold the attention of with something amusing or diverting. See Synonyms at amuse.
  2. To extend hospitality toward: entertain friends at dinner.
  3. To consider; contemplate: entertain an idea.
  4. To hold in mind; harbour: entertained few illusions.
  5. Archaic To continue with; maintain.
  6. To give admittance to; receive.
  7. To show hospitality to guests.
  8. To provide entertainment.

Again, all of the above. Entertain your followers, give them a reason to come back for more. Hold their attention. Extend hospitality. All of these things seem logical yet sometimes we just need reminding!

Evoke – Educe – Elicit

Verb – e•voked, e•vok•ing, e•vokes

1. To summon or call forth: actions that evoked our mistrust.
2. To call to mind by naming, citing, or suggesting: songs that evoke old memories.
3. To create anew, especially by means of the imagination: a novel that evokes the Depression in accurate detail.
Synonyms: evoke, educe, elicit

These verbs mean to draw forth or bring out something latent, hidden, or unexpressed: evoke laughter; educed significance from the event; trying to elicit the truth.

This is a particular skill in creating content. How can you evoke reaction. Make someone think, react, COMMENT on what you have written. This is a great challenge and one that is definitely not easy.

ENGAGE!

Verb – en•gaged, en•gag•ing, en•gag•es

1. To attract and hold the attention of; engross: a hobby that engaged her for hours at a time.
2. To win over or attract: His smile engages everyone he meets.
3. To draw into; involve: engage a shy person in conversation.
4. To involve oneself or become occupied; participate: engage in conversation.

There are quite a few meanings for ‘engage’. I have taken the liberty of whittling it down to those I feel are most relevant to what you are actually doing here on the Internet involved in social media and content marketing!

If you aren’t ultimately engaging then why are you here? Are you merely a voyeur? Are you looking but not seeing? Listening but not hearing?

The content you create must be engaging and then, once you have the attention of someone and they are interested in you; do not… I repeat… do not… miss the opportunity of engaging with them.

Content is king, queen, knave and slave. We have to be a slave to creation of content… but when we have it down to a fine art, then we can become kings and queens of our industries.

The competition out there is fierce. Your content is about you, what you know and what you know others know.

You can’t (shouldn’t) fake it – and it is damn hard to make it. But once you do the Internet will open up to you and once it does it’s a really fine place to be.
